The March 2021 report introduces European Energy Exchange (EEX) data for the first time. Historical data for this exchange from 2018 to 2021 is featured in the Additions to Historical Data tab.
Since the last report, extensive revisions have been made to FIA data on B3 volume and open interest in 2020 and 2021. Revised data for B3 is featured in the Revision to B3 Data tab.
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives was 5.57 billion contracts in the month of March, up 21.4% from the previous month and up 22.8% from March 2020. This was the highest monthly amount ever recorded, surpassing the previous record-setting total of January 2021.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first three months of the year was 14.83 billion contracts, up 30% from the first three months of 2020.
Total open interest at the end of March was 1.08 billion contracts, down 1.4% from the previous month but up 6.4% from a year ago.
