U.S. District Judge William Pauley issued an order on Oct. 20 appointing Paul Atkins, a former member of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to serve as an independent monitor of derivatives reporting by Deutsche Bank. The appointment fulfills a provision in an enforcement action taken by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in August to address failures in the bank's reporting of its derivatives positions and is intended to ensure compliance going forward. Atkins is currently the head of Patomak Partners, a Washington-based regulatory consulting firm.
