Appointments, promotions and other people news in the derivatives industry
The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Elad Roisman as SEC commissioner on an 85-14 vote, returning the agency to a full, five-member group. Roisman previously worked on the Senate Banking Committee, where he was the panel’s chief counsel. He replaced Michael Piwowar, who left the SEC in July.
Separately, Michael Piwowar is joining the Milken Institute to be executive director of the group's Center for Financial Markets. Piwowar, a Republican, was an SEC commissioner from 2013 until his departure in July.
Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, will remain in his role until Jan. 31, 2020. UK Chancellor Philip Hammond confirmed the extension of the position in a letter and explained that it would ensure "continuity at the Bank during this exceptional period." Carney accepted the extension and said, "I am willing to do whatever I can in order to promote both a successful Brexit and an effective transition at the Bank of England."
Additionally, Jon Cunliffe has been re-appointed as deputy governor responsible for financial stability. His term will last until October 2023. Cunliffe's area of responsibility includes oversight of clearinghouses and other financial market infrastructures. Kate Birchall was appointed head of Asia Pacific operations at clearinghouse LCH. Based in Sydney, she will report to CEO Martin Pluves, CEO. Birchall will be responsible for LCH’s business in Asia Pacific, including the CCP’s existing OTC derivatives clearing operations in Sydney and Tokyo. She most recently had worked previously at the National Australia Bank as head of portfolio optimization and collateral.
Citigroup has made three new appointments within its futures, clearing and collateral team. Gordon Ball will lead electronic execution for EMEA, based in London and reporting to Sabrina Wilson, the global head of electronic and algorithmic trading and EMEA head of futures, clearing and collateral. He joins Citi after 18 years at Goldman Sachs, where he most recently led product development for European equities electronic trading and derivatives execution and clearing. Ball will be joined in London by Max Middleton, who has been appointed to the EMEA electronic sales team and will report to Jason Massey, the head of EMEA sales for futures, clearing and collateral. Massey also previously worked at Goldman on the electronic trading desk. Joseph Michniowski has been named head of electronic execution and algorithmic trading in Asia. He joined from Citi, where he headed Citi's equities quant trading analytics. Michniowski is based in Hong Kong and reports to Wilson and Ian Nissen, APAC head of futures, clearing and collateral.
Terry Burke joined Credit Suisse as the head of U.S. prime derivatives services, reporting to John Dabbs, global head of prime derivatives. Burke previously worked in client development and sales at CME Group. Before that he worked at Barclays as head of Americas futures and options distribution.
Veteran equity options executive Kevin Murphy has joined Hamilton Executions, a New York-based broker-dealer that specializes in executing options trades, as senior client relationship manager. Murphy spent more than 30 years at Citi in a variety of roles related to electronic execution and listed options before leaving the bank in 2016. During his career he served on a number of industry committees, and last year Cboe Global Markets appointed him to the board of directors of its securities exchange subsidiaries.
Intercontinental Exchange has named Andrew Surdykowski its next general counsel, succeeding Johnathan Short, who intends to retire after 14 years in that role. Surdykowski is currently the company’s senior vice president and associate general counsel, and has worked on ICE’s legal team since 2005. Addtionally, Elizabeth King, general counsel of the New York Stock Exchange, will add to her role as ICE’s chief regulatory officer to oversee the company’s global regulatory and legal affairs initiatives. King joined the NYSE in 2014 from KCG Holdings, Inc., where she served as deputy general counsel and global head of regulatory affairs.
Deutsche Boerse has established a dedicated 24-person team focused on blockchain and crypto assets with 24 people led by managing director Jens Hachmeister. Hachmeister has been at Deutsche Boerse since 2000 and has held a wide range of roles at Deutsche Boerse, most recently being appointed chief of staff to the CEO in April. Hachmeister's deputy in the effort will be Eric Leupold, who has been running the Deutsche Boerse Venture Network.
Seed CX, which operates a digital currency exchange for institutions, has named John Hart its chief information officer. Hart joins Seed CX after 17 years at CME Group, most recently as managing director of technology engineering.
