“Made in Michigan” US Senator Debbie Stabenow has dedicated her career to improving the lives of Americans in her home state and across the country. Throughout her years in public service, she has blazed trails and opened doors for women and girls. Among her many “firsts,” she was the first woman elected to the United States Senate from Michigan.
As chairwoman or ranking member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry for the last thirteen years, her work has shaped the nation’s agricultural economy. With direct oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Stabenow has focused on promoting healthy, innovative derivatives markets for agricultural producers to manage their business risks, while also protecting consumers and the integrity of the financial system. She has tirelessly advocated for sufficient funding for the agency and its whistleblower program so that US derivatives markets can remain among the most liquid and trusted markets in the world.
Stabenow was instrumental in establishing the framework to regulate swaps markets following the 2008 financial crisis in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. To address the climate crisis, Stabenow has authored numerous bills promoting participation in voluntary carbon credit markets, including the Growing Climate Solutions Act, passed into law in 2022. Stabenow has also led the charge in calling for enhanced consumer protections in the crypto market, sponsoring legislation authorizing the CFTC to regulate non-security digital assets.
