Legislative oversight of the CFTC: a primer

part of the FIA Law & Compliance Division webinar series

18 May 2017

By

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission will address a wide range of issues in 2017. Much of the CFTC’s work will be impacted, directly or indirectly, by the legislative branch.

This webinar will explore the relationship between the CFTC and the Congress, explaining how prior legislation (like the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 and the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act) and potential future statutory amendments (including CEA Reauthorization and the Financial CHOICE Act) impact the Commission’s operations. We will also explore the US Senate nomination confirmation process, Congressional oversight powers, and budgetary maneuvers that dictate funding levels for independent agencies.

Presenters:

Leslie Belcher, Michael Dunn, Micah Green and Matt Kulkin of Steptoe & Johnson LLC
