Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached 8.24 billion contracts in the month of September, the highest monthly total ever recorded. The September total was up 12.8% from the previous record of August 2022 and up 46.3% from September 2021.
The main driver for the record amount of trading was options rather than futures. Global trading of options reached 5.44 billion contracts in September, up by more than 73% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.80 billion contracts, up 12.6% from last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first nine months of the year was 60.66 billion contracts, up 35.6% from the first nine months of 2021. The majority of that increase came from equity index contracts.
Total open interest at the end of September was 1.17 billion contracts. The September total was down 1.8% from August 2022 but up 2.5% from a year ago.
