Introducing the ETD Tracker:
This month’s data on futures and options trading is accessible in two formats: a spreadsheet accessible through the link below and a set of interactive visualizations called the FIA ETD Tracker. The ETD Tracker consists of interactive visualizations on the FIA website that allow users to view data on volume and open interest, with filters based on year and month, region and jurisdiction, asset group and type of product. The ETD Tracker also includes visualizations that rank exchanges by total volume in the latest month and year to date as well as open interest in the latest month. Highlights from March 2024:
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached 14.84 billion contracts in March. This was down 8.9% from February 2024 but up 40.4% from March 2023.
Options continue to gain in popularity. Global trading of options reached 12.43 billion contracts in March, up by more than 61% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.41 billion contracts in March, down 15.8% from the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first three months of the year was 47.91 billion contracts, up 74% from the first three months of 2023. The majority of that increase came from equity index contracts.
Total options volume for the year so far was 41.11 billion contracts, up 102.3% from the previous year. Total futures volume was 6.8 billion contracts in 2023 so far, down 5.8% from 2023.
Total open interest at the end of March was 1.29 billion contracts. The March total was up 0.4% from February 2024 and up 10.7% from a year ago.
