Introducing the ETD Tracker:
This month’s data on futures and options trading is accessible in two formats: a spreadsheet accessible through the link below and a set of interactive visualizations called the FIA ETD Tracker. The ETD Tracker consists of interactive visualizations on the FIA website that allow users to view data on volume and open interest, with filters based on year and month, region and jurisdiction, asset group and type of product. The ETD Tracker also includes visualizations that rank exchanges by total volume in the latest month and year to date as well as open interest in the latest month. Highlights from June 2024:
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached 16.98 billion contracts in June, the second highest level ever recorded. This was down 5.7% from May 2024’s record breaking month but up 69% from June 2023.
Options continue to gain in popularity. Global trading of options reached 14.57 billion contracts in June, up by more than 92% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.41 billion contracts in June, down 2.6% from the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first half of the year was 98.07 billion contracts, up 75.8% from the first half of 2023. The majority of that increase came from equity contracts.
Total options volume for the year so far was 83.7 billion contracts, up 101.3% from the previous year. Total futures volume was 14.37 billion contracts in 2024 so far, up 1.2% from 2023.
Total open interest at the end of June was 1.34 billion contracts. The June total was down 3.1% from May 2024 but up 12.7% from a year ago.
