Introducing the ETD Tracker:
This month FIA is releasing the June data on futures and options trading in two formats: the established spreadsheet format and a new format called the FIA ETD Tracker. The ETD Tracker consists of interactive visualizations on the FIA website that allow users to view data on volume and open interest, with filters based on year and month, region and jurisdiction, asset group and type of product. The ETD Tracker also includes visualizations that rank exchanges by total volume in the latest month and year to date as well as open interest in the latest month. Highlights from June 2023:
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached 10.04 billion contracts in June. This was down 1.7% from May 2023 but up 42.5% from June 2022.
Options continue to gain in popularity. Global trading of options reached 7.57 billion contracts in June, up by more than 66% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.47 billion contracts in June, down 1.5% from the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first half of the year was 55.78 billion contracts, up 44.7% from the first half of 2022. The majority of that increase came from equity index contracts.
Total options volume for the year so far was 41.59 billion contracts, up 71.9% from the previous year. Total futures volume was 14.2 billion contracts in 2023 so far, down 1.2% from 2022.
Total open interest at the end of June was 1.19 billion contracts. The June total was down 4% from May 2023 but up 8.8% from a year ago.
