Introducing the ETD Tracker:
This month’s data on futures and options trading is accessible in two formats: a spreadsheet accessible through the link below and a set of interactive visualizations called the FIA ETD Tracker. The ETD Tracker consists of interactive visualizations on the FIA website that allow users to view data on volume and open interest, with filters based on year and month, region and jurisdiction, asset group and type of product. The ETD Tracker also includes visualizations that rank exchanges by total volume in the latest month and year to date as well as open interest in the latest month. Highlights from July 2024:
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached 18.99 billion contracts in July, the highest level ever recorded. This was up 11.9% from June 2024 and up 68.7% from July 2023.
Options continue to gain in popularity. Global trading of options reached 16.46 billion contracts in July, up by more than 85% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.53 billion contracts in July, up 7% from the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first seven months of the year was 117.06 billion contracts, up 74.6% from the first seven months of 2023. The majority of that increase came from equity contracts.
Total options volume for the year so far was 100.16 billion contracts, up 98.4% from the previous year. Total futures volume was 16.9 billion contracts in 2024 so far, up 2% from 2023.
Total open interest at the end of July was 1.37 billion contracts. The July total was up 2.5% from June 2024 and up 13.6% from a year ago.
