Introducing the ETD Tracker:
This month FIA is releasing the July data on futures and options trading in two formats: the established spreadsheet format and a new format called the FIA ETD Tracker. The ETD Tracker consists of interactive visualizations on the FIA website that allow users to view data on volume and open interest, with filters based on year and month, region and jurisdiction, asset group and type of product. The ETD Tracker also includes visualizations that rank exchanges by total volume in the latest month and year to date as well as open interest in the latest month. Highlights from July 2023:
Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives reached a record 11.25 billion contracts in July. This was up 12.1% from June 2023 and up 71.4% from July 2022.
Options continue to gain in popularity. Global trading of options reached 8.89 billion contracts in July, up by more than 108% from last year, with most of that trading taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Global trading of futures reached 2.36 billion contracts in July, up 2.6% from the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first seven months of the year was 67.03 billion contracts, up 48.6% from the first seven months of 2022. The majority of that increase came from equity index contracts.
Total options volume for the year so far was 50.48 billion contracts, up 77.4% from the previous year. Total futures volume was 16.56 billion contracts in 2023 so far, down 0.7% from 2022.
Total open interest at the end of July was 1.21 billion contracts. The July total was up 1.7% from June 2023 and up 8.6% from a year ago.
