Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives was 2.12 billion contracts in the month of July, down 16.4% from the previous month but up 10.2% from July 2017. On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first seven months of the year was 17.02 billion contracts, up 18.4% from the first seven months of 2017. Total open interest at the end of July was 864.7 million contracts, up 2.4% from a year ago.
The report includes statistics from three exchanges recently added to the FIA database: the International Energy Exchange, a commodity exchange in China, LedgerX, a cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., and Asia Pacific Exchange, a commodity exchange in Singapore. The report also includes statistics for the bitcoin futures contracts that began trading on the Cboe Futures Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange last December.
