Worldwide volume of exchange-traded derivatives was 2.307 billion contracts in the month of April, down 9.9% from the previous month but up 20.5% from April 2017. On a year-to-date basis, volume in the first four months of the year was 9.674 billion contracts, up 22.7% from the first four months of 2017. Total open interest at the end of April was 865.9 million contracts, up 3.3% from a year ago.
The report includes statistics from two exchanges recently added to the FIA database: the International Energy Exchange, a commodity exchange in China, and LedgerX, a cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S. The report also includes statistics for the bitcoin futures contracts that began trading on the Cboe Futures Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange last December.
